how’s this for an engaging campaign?

Start with this satire here: http://t.co/SN0fF1f

Which ran on the Guardian with tongue in cheek: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2011/jul/07/when-zombies-attack-bristol-city-council-undead-invasion

Which Drudgereport.com picked up… and left out the tongue and the cheek. ha – not sure if it was intentional or not.

Meanwhile Bristol city council’s communications director @peterholt99 was manning the tweets, jumping on mentions and drumming up more attention.

The festival in Bristol at the end of the chain, by the way, is sold out. Better luck next year?

the means of production are the message?

Mathew Ingram at GigaOm asks “what does the journalism of the future look like”. He focuses on the medium of production – the means journalists use / will use to research and produce their work. Smart – i suppose he’s saying “the medium of production effects the message”. I agree with him that journalism will “broaden” in the future, in a good way.

The driver of that broadening is the intersection of people and technology. Here’s what i mean:

In a (now) three year old article, Nicholas Carr suggests that one of those mediums [i imagine] journalists use heavily in the course of their work is “making us stupid”. (digression: i can’t help but wonder if its articles like the ones in The Atlantic, not google in general, that are making us stupid)

These two ideas meet in my mind like this:

the internet allows the delusion that we know things that we really don’t – authoritatively written blog posts, wikipedia, wikileaks, google and the overscheduled nature of our lives allows us to make the mistake that the thoughts we do have are our own, and not someone else’s. Time pressure + Internet = changes in the way we think + produce work. The flipside is relevant here, as well; the same variables greatly impact the way we consume & assimilate information.

Radical transparency in blogging, social media, etc is now the norm and not the exception. If you disagree, it’s ’cause you’re too old.

Celebrity stalker-culture has trickled all the way down to the local level. Now we all can be paparazzi fodder, in a way. Aren’t we lucky?

That novel you're working on won't ever be finished lest you heed this warning...

Creative acts require a decision to complete; otherwise they can go on forever. That is: that novel you’re working on won’t ever be finished. Even if you see it in print you’ll still have edits & additions you’d make if you could.

The difference between ‘published’ and ‘not’ is your decision to call it done.

Here’s a trick: whatever you’re working on, break it into pieces. However, be sure that those pieces have definite ends based outside of your head. Sticking with the example of a novel – try writing like the serial novelists of the 1800′s. Dickens published a chapter at a time. He had a monthly deadline to meet; one that he chose but, once chosen, had to be met every month lest his publisher and readers take serious issue with him!

Whatever your creative endeavour… remember the wisdom of Glengarry Glenross:

always be closing
