The first is staleness of imagery;the other is lack of precision. The writer either has a meaning and cannot express it,or he inadvertently says something else,or he is almost indifferent as to whether his words mean anything or not. This mixture of vagueness and sheer incompetence is the most marked characteristic of modern English prose, and especially of any kind of political writing. As soon as certain topics are raised, the concrete melts into the abstract and no one seems able to think of turns of speech that are not hackneyed:prose consists less and less of words chosen for the sake of their meaning, and more and more of phrases tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated henhouse.

Fred Wilson writes

Twitter is default public and everyone knows that’s what it is. Your Twitter identity is the lightest weight, most public, and therefore the best identity on the web.

and

Default public online identities are very powerful and very revealing about people, maybe more so than default private identities. They can be used for almost anything that default private identities can be used for. But they can be used without asking for permission from the owner of the profile because the information is public already

Agreed. It sounds to me, however, that Fred is assuming we each interact in twitter without regard to that identity; assuming that we just ‘be’ and the identity takes care of itself.

I expect the opposite. Social media and the knowledge we’re being watched inspires each of us to craft those identities carefully, as if we were writing a script for a movie.

Twitter is the reflecting pool and we’re all staring into it. Just… remember to look away, hmkay?

When it comes to feeding myself… i never seem to learn. Overall i’m a generally healthy guy. However, i do often make terrible choices in cooking, and suddenly wonder whether my mistakes might educate the future generations of gluttons.

My book of simple one-line recipes of what-not-to-cook will start with “chicken soo gui for breakfast”. The moment of Chinese ecstasy is not worth the entire day of self loathing and bloating that the crunchy, chickeny, gravilicious meal will give you. Trust me on this one, hmkay?

Last week I posted a note about ‘not being in your 99%’. Whether I agree or disagree with the #OWS movement wasn’t the point. Rather, it’s that they’re lumping me in with them, speaking for me, about me. Bullshit.

What I’ve in mind here is what was/is behind my irritation with the 99% conversation: identity. Your public self image will exist whether you participate in it or not. Define yourself before someone does it for you.

Hi, i’m not in the 1% of the top earners in the USA. However, and with respect to the Occupy Wall St “we are the 99%” protest… i guarantee you i’m not part of their 99% either. How do i know this? Their list of demands, or rather, their list of proposed demands they’re not demanding:

Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the “Books.” World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the “Books.” And I don’t mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.
.
Demand twelve: Outlaw all credit reporting agencies.

http://occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-demands-for-occupy-wall-st-moveme/

Who am i? I’m not the top 1% wealthy, i’m not in the 1% that want to grab at power & occupy wall street; i’m in the 98% that get up each morning and go about the regular business of living a productive life, raising a family, trading my labour/knowledge/intellectual property for income.

‘cuse me, i’ve got bills to pay and a small business to run.

this test isn't about math

So, here’s the thing that makes life so interesting: Darwin was wrong about you.

His evolution suggests “only the strong shall survive”, and it’s likely so. But just because they’re the strong doesn’t mean they can’t get their asses kicked by you, today.

That’s right. See, what every long shot, come from behind, underdog will tell you is this:

the other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds may be stacked to one side – and that’s fair enough – but the thing is… this isn’t a math test.

This is a completely different kind of test.

Passion trumps logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the clocks start ticking just remember: out there the results don’t always add up. No matter what the stats may say and the experts may think and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on, all bets are off.

Winning isn’t everything. Going for the win is.
